Vocabulary : Ops

Ops

"Ops" is short for "Operations". Operations is a part of a business which manages day-to-day processes, like production, shipping, storage, etc. Operations staff work to make the business run more efficiently.

Many companies have Operations departments or divisions. Some companies have an executive who's named the Chief Operations Officer (COO), who assists the CEO.

"Being responsible for"

"Being responsible for" something means that you have to make sure that something is taken care of. For example:

I was responsible for taking care of my little brother.

This means that it was your job to take care of your brother. If something bad happened to your brother, you would be blamed for it.

Here's an example that you might see on a sign in the locker room at a gym:

Total Fitness club is not responsible for any missing or stolen items.

This means that the gym will not have to pay for your things if they get stolen.

determine (something)

To "determine" something means to figure it out or make a decision about it.

You "determine" facts or conclusions. For example:

Police have not yet determined the cause of death.

I've determined that the next camera I buy should be a Canon T3i

The word "determine" is more formal than "figure out".

(someone) fields a question

When someone asks a question that can be answered by several people, the person who answers is "fielding" the question.

This phrase comes from the game of baseball, where players on the baseball field stand and try to catch balls that are hit in their direction. Catching baseballs in this position is called "fielding" balls.

a staffer

The word "staffer" means "someone who's on the staff". In other words, it describes someone who works in a certain company or group.

a division

A "division" is a large group of people within a company who are managed together. Divisions are larger than departments, which are another kind of grouping in a company.

A division is usually led by a director, a vice president, or some other executive.

"If you get questions that should be fielded by Ops, this will help you determine which Ops staffer is responsible for which sales division."

TRANSCRIPT: It's the moment millions of Americans have been waiting for. The numbers for the Powerball are drawn for a jackpot rivalling the largest lottery payout in U.S. history. A winning ticket was sold in Florida for Saturday's (May 18) record of more than 590 million dollars, officials say. It's the largest jackpot the Powerball lottery has ever seen. The chances of picking the lucky numbers were one in 175 million. But that didn't deter people from snatching up tickets at a staggering rate. California sold a million dollars worth every hour on Saturday. Here in Washington, hopefuls were keen whatever the odds.
STEPHEN ADEKOYA, LOTTERY BUYER : "You got to give it a try, you may succeed. It's like life, you go to sleep, you don't know if you are going to wake up the next day, that's how I feel about it."
REPORTER: The largest jackpot in the U.S. came last year in the Mega Millions lottery, where 656 million dollars were split between winners in three states.

Word Families

In English ,words that are made from the same root by adding different suffixes or negative prefixes called "world families". (Adding other prefixes to roots makes bigger changes in meaning. The words are still related, but not as closely.) Below is an example-- the word family 'act.'

A Word Family: Act

Verbs : act ,activate ,actuate,deactivate
Nouns :act,action,activation,activity,actor, actress,deactivation,inaction,inactivity
Adjectives:actionable,activated,active,deactivated,inactive
Adverbs:actively

Related families with the same root and suffixes

(This list shows only the most common forms. Parts of speech aren’t noted-- they are the same as for the suffixes above)
counteract
enact
hyperactive, hyperactivity
interact, interaction, interactive, interactively, interactivity
overactive
overreact, over-reaction
proactive, proactively
react, reaction, reactivate, reactivation, reactive, reactivity
transact, transaction
Some Definitions with examples:
how to use these parts of speech

To act is to do something. We say,.“Actions speak louder than words.” To activate is to make something (like an account) active. For example, after applying for and receiving a credit card, you must call a certain phone numberto activate it before you can use it. The call confirms that you received the card in the mail. Once it is activatedyou can use it for transactions (in this case purchases).

An active person does things. Activity means “getting out and doing something” rather than just passively letting things happen. (Hyperactivity or being overactive is moving around or doing too much.)

It is wise to be proactive, and take action before problems get serious. The opposite approach is waiting to reactto problems. However, there can also be a problem if a person acts before he thinks!

So what’s the best advice? Participate actively in finding solutions to problems, but be sure to think first!
How to Use Different Parts of Speech in Sentences
(as demonstrated in the definitions above)

NOUNS

tell who or what the sentence is about (as the subject of the sentence.) See actions, activity, & hyperactivity in the definitions above. Nouns can also be the object of a verb or preposition-- the person or thing that receives the action, as in transactions or action (in paragraph 3.) Sometimes there can be several nouns in the same word family, especially if one is a concept (like activity) and one is a person (like actor or actress.)

Notice that the infinitive (the ‘to’ form) of a verb can be the subject of a sentence, acting as a noun as in to act andto activate (the first use.)

Sometimes the present participle of a verb can also act as a noun. (It’s called a gerund when it is used as a noun.) 'Acting’ is a gerund in the sentence: “Acting is a profession that requires constant practice.”

VERBS usually show the action of a sentence: what a noun does. To activate, to react, & acts (in paragraph 3) are verbs.

ADJECTIVES describe (tell about) nouns. Activated, active, overactive, & proactive are adjectives. Activated, like many adjectives, is made using the past participle of a verb. Adjectives can also be made from the present participles of verbs: “Mr. Miller is the acting vice president of the company until Mr. Baker returns.”

Sometimes there are two or more adjectives made from the same verb: boring and bored, frightening andfrightened, surprising and surprised.

In these cases we use the present participle (-ing form) to express the cause of a feeling, and the past participle (usually ending in -ed) to express the result or the feeling itself.

Examples: “Mr. Smith’s class last night was very boring!

We were so bored we counted the minutes until ten o’clock!"

“Have you ever had a really frightening experience? Some people get so frightened at horror movies that they scream.”

ADVERBS modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They describe how something is done. Actively is an adverb. It tells you how to participate. (Another example: My brother always works proactively, He thinks ahead and takes steps to avoid problems.)

Cách dùng A few , A fair , A couple ..

Xin chào !

Chúng ta xem 1 ví dụ về cách dùng a few, a fair và couple:

"All I need is a few shirts, a couple of changes of underwear, one pair of pants, and my toiletry kit. That's about it."

a few (of something)

adj. more than one but indefinitely small in number

"A few" is a number that's not specific, but it usually means somewhere between 3-10. It's a little less formal than "several" and also sounds like a slightly lower number. Here are some examples:

Đọc thêm

You may want to consider hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions.

That's a very generous offer. Um, let me think it over for a few days and get back to you.

a pair of pants

Even though pants are one single item of clothing, they have two leg parts. Because of this, we always say "pants" with an "-s" at the end, and if you want to count them, you call them "a pair":

Why do you have so many pairs of pants?

You also call these clothing items "a pair":

a pair of glasses

a pair of gloves

a pair of shorts

a pair of shoes

a pair of socks

All (someone) needs is (something)

Use this phrase to talk about doing something easily:

All you need is love.

All I need is two more days, and I promise I'll be able to pay you back.

All you need is a screwdriver and a pair of pliers.

a change of (clothes/pants/etc.)

A different set of clothes that you can change into is "a change of clothes":

Did you bring a change of clothes?

We also use the phrases:

a change of pants

a change of underwear

a change of socks

However, "a change a shirt" is uncommon.

a toiletry kit

"Toiletries" are items like toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, dental floss, soap, etc.

When people travel, they sometimes put all of their toiletries together in a small bag. This is known as a "toiletry kit".

Other examples of "kits" are:

  • a first aid kit
  • an emergency kit

That's about it.

When you're listing things, and you can't think of anything else to add to the list, finish with "That's about it."

A: ...some coffee, a loaf of bread... and some fruit, please.

B: Anything else?

A: No, that's about it.

Money Words (Financial Vocabulary)

Xin chào !
Bài này giải thích 1 số từ thông dụng về tài chính như Compensate,Currency ,insufficient funds,Credit, Borrowing, and Interest .

Chúc các bạn học tiếng Anh tốt .

This page gives a simple explanation of common money words (financial terminology) and banking. After reading it, there’s a link to a quiz to check your understanding.

Money Words: Types of payment and compensation

a pile of coins

To compensate- to give something-- usually money-- in return for something else-- (most often work.) Common words for compensation for labor include salary (an agreed payment by the month or year-- not based on the number of hours worked-- for higher level-services), wages (usually paid by the hour), earnings, and pay.

They all mean basically the same thing, except that manual laborers (including factory workers, fast food workers, etc.) are paid wages, not a salary.

Types of money: Currency is the money currently in use in a country, including paper money (bills) and (metal) coins. Cash is money in one’s hand-- bills and coins, as compared to checks, money orders, or credit cards, which can be converted into money at a bank or often at an ATM (automatic teller machine.)

Fees are charges for services. For example, a bank may charge fees for checking accounts, loan processing, or to cover “bounced” checks (when the check writer had insufficient funds in his account to cover the check he wrote.) Sometimes banks will reduce or waive (eliminate) certain fees as an incentive (encouragement) for customers to open a high-value savings account.

Financing Growth: Credit, Borrowing, and Interest

a bank building

When a company (or a person) does not have sufficient (enough) savings to meet their needs or goals (for example, a planned expansion of the business or the acquisition of another company that they can use to increase future profits), they may borrow the necessary money. A bank will lend (loan) money on credit.

The company will need to pay it back later with interest, which is an extra payment (usually a percentage of the amount they borrowed) in return for the opportunity to use the bank’s money for a certain period of time.

The money that is borrowed is called a loan. (However, money borrowed in order to buy a house is a mortgage. Mortgage rules and payments can be very complicated!) The lender (usually a bank or other financial institution) is also called the creditor. A person who borrows money from someone else is a debtor, since they owe them that money (the debt.)

Sometimes English learners aren’t sure how to use certain money words relating to lending and borrowing. Remember that to lend or to loan is to give money (or something else, like a tool or book) for a certain period of time and to borrow is to receive (get) it. Here are a few more hints:

You can ask someone “Can I borrow $5.00?” or “Could you please lend/loan me $5.00?” In English we don’t say “Please borrow me $5.00.” That leaves it unclear who would be the lender and who would be the borrower.

The person with the money may answer, “Sure! I’ll be glad to lend you $5.00,” or “No way! You didn’t repay me the last time you borrowed some money!”

Financial Decision-making

To allocate is to decide where (note ‘locate’) to use or invest resources (money, time, etc.). The best allocation will depend on a company’s current circumstances-- how much money and staff is available, what the best opportunities are, etc. To avoid unintended consequences (unexpected results), managers will make such decisions in conformity with the best business practices. (To conform is to fit into or follow what others do.)

A company’s Board of Directors will establish policies they expect the CEO and department managers to implement (put into practice.) Smart policies with excellent implementation will result in generating maximum profits.
